My girlfriend and I played this 2-player variant this week (though, we chose our characters randomly.) It was great fun! Never a dull moment when you have two travellers to take care of.Playing two players with two characters each also still leaves space for a fifth neutral character to gobble up space and make for an even more competitive experience.
Here's our first finished game using two characters each (the chopsticks divided our play areas up.)
