Actually, I believe the opposite is true - the second space on a road is farther on the road, according to the rules. We read that as "farther along the journey", not "farther from the destination". If you read it as the second space is "behind" the first space, then players who take the first spot of a double space essentially lose a turn to the player that takes the second space, since they arrive last and depart first.

Hmm my rules say different, on page 3 the second "Way of Travel" image caption says, "The Purple traveler is farther behind than the Green traveler, therefore he starts". The purple player is on the second spot. Green is on the 'road' spot.

I hadn't noticed this bit in the book, before asking, darn eye operation :arrrh:

The FF euro-minis fit fine on the width except for a couple of mm on the top.

Oh, then we played it correctly! Nice.

Near the end of a 4 player game. Green has completed two of the three panoramas, while grey has been having lots of encounters and blue has been shopping non-stop!

Are they made of cardboard? If not, then the dumbest design decision is that they have square corners. Can someone clarify?

They're cards with square corners. I assume they were made this way so they could line up. Since they're never hidden, it's not really a big deal.

Never shuffled, and never held in hand. They should hold up fine, and the square corners are thematically correct (since they are paintings, after all).

They are square because they all line up to form a complete panorama, hence the name. It wasn't a stupid design decision at all. It's actually my favorite part of the game.

That said, I'm pretty sure they are the same size as the other cards, and I think I sleeved all of them, those included. My copy of the game is not with me right now so I can't verify, but you shouldn't have a problem with those panoramas either way.

Very cool. I have an uncle that moved to Japan. I think I'm gonna try to hit him up for some 1 yen coins. Thought they'd make a cool addition to the game.

I do like the relaxed play of a Tokaido game. But the one thing that really annoyed me was ruining 3 of the coins while trying to separate them from their sprues. Most of the games I own have cut outs and I (and my girlfriend) have become adept at pressing, but nothing I could do seemed to save these coins!

There have been several attempts at designing a solo variant for Tokaido, probably inspired by the Zen atmosphere, pursuing a kind of solo meditation exercise. However, this is not as easy as it looks like (maybe because there is more player interaction than people recognize at first sight, but that’s another story).
However, I believe that in the rules we can already find what’s needed to play solo: the Neutral Player for 2-p games. Here is how I understand it. I hope you find it of interest.

RULES
The rules already describe how a dummy player behaves, the neutral player for 2-player games: no gold, no cards, just a marker which interacts with the human player in three ways:
- Can block spaces
- Takes a meal away at the inn
- Donates 1 coin for each temple spot and competes for the bonus

It is straightforward to apply those rules to two dummies. As the neutral player is moved by the foremost player in 2-p games, you have to come up with a rule of movement. My take is to use a d6: that gives the MINIMUM number of spaces to move; if the space is blocked, go to the NEXT legal space.
Example:
H is the human player
X and Y the dummies
It is X’s turn
A, B, C, D: available spaces
This is the sequence of spaces, below each space you have the related number for the die:
X H A Y B C D
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
So...
1 & 2: go to A
3 & 4: go to B
5: go to C
6: go to D

If you have 2 colored dice, you can throw both and apply the first one to the first dummy, then the second to the other dummy.

That’s it. For flavor, I assign a character card to each dummy, just to give them more personality. Your own character card and starting position can be random (as in normal rules) or just picked if you feel like playing a certain role. You can also play with one less meal at the inn and with variable starting money if you feel like it (strongly recommended).

Then the whole game becomes an exercise against yourself, much in Zen spirit of the game. I believe a good VP target is in the 70ies, but I’m eager to hear what others believe.

RATIONALE

Just a couple of words about this solo variant. I think that in Tokaido the two main areas where you define your result are blocking other players and managing your cash. Both are very difficult to simulate with a script for a AI, a human player could easily win by screwing that script. I tried a couple of them and came to the conclusion that playing solo against AIs is pointless, it strips away the nice part of the game. So, better to play against yourself. The enemy within.
However, you still need somebody to block you. If AI movement were scripted (e.g.: never skip spaces), again you would play counting AI movements, turns ahead, and planning accordingly, a tedious rationalizing un-Zen activity. Thus the need for some unpredictability, like against a human player (well, a human would be nastier than a die)

I hate it when that happens. It must have been a blunt die or poorly pressed. The tokens were falling out of the board on my copy, I was afraid I'd lose some before getting a chance to play it.

Still no piece, completely disheartening. Here's my latest plea to try and fix the situation. I'm sure it will get the same results as the last 2 emails since these guys clearly don't care about the customers that spent their hard earned money on supporting their company.

Still have not received this missing piece. It's quite upsetting. Have played the game and enjoyed it. Its Unfortunate that the expansion is coming out but I won't buy it due to this situation. I have researched this on Boardgamegeek.com and there are numerous people who were missing pieces upon purchase. It's unfortunate that this has put a black mark on such a great game and designer.

Subject: Missing pieces

Message: Hi there,

Just purchased Tokaido yesterday and was excited to play it. Upon opening the package I noticed there was a piece missing. I am missing the scoring disc that goes along with the yellow meeple. Is there anyway to get a replacement piece. Really looking forward to getting this game onto the table this weekend.

Thank you,
Jason

Sorry you are still waiting. No fun at all. I've been there.

I finally did get my missing piece but only after I contacted Passport Games via their Facebook page. Once I had done that, the response was overwhelmingly positive. They really wanted to fix the situation and they did accurately and quickly. Along the way, they explained that something was wrong with their website form.

In the correspondence we had, I was asked to send my mailing address to Marketing@PassportGameStudios.com. You might want to try contacting them through that address.

Hope you get the piece!
