Yes, I also understood keeping the food cards unseen to the other players because there are times where someone skips pretty far ahead to the Inn while the other players still have options to spend money on their next turns. They shouldn't see what food cards are awaiting them at the inn so that they don't know how much money they need to save for the inn and are forced to spend responsibly until they get there(just like the first person who got there). Keeps it fair for everyone.

I know this is a bit of an old thread now, but I am really curious about the question regarding the "extra choice" that is now present if Satsuki takes the free meal. I also feel a bit confused there. It seems to really diminish the power of her ability in an unfair way, since none of the other characters have abilities that indirectly create a benefit for your opponents.

Then again, I guess part of the strategy would be sometimes choosing not to take the free meal so you can buy from what the inn is serving and potentially prevent other players from being able to afford theirs, though I don't feel like that is a choice you'd want to make often considering her starting funds. Either way, her ability is a pretty literal take on "beggars can't be choosers".

I think the benefit to her really outweighs the indirect benefit to her opponents:
1) Most of the time, she can get her meal for free. This saves coins for other money-dependent pursuits, reduces the necessity to stop at the farm, etc.
2) That card is there regardless of when she arrives at the Inn. Which means it's not as crucial for her to position herself to arrive at the Inn early, in order to ensure that she'll be able to afford something.
3) Players will be less likely to try to price you out of eating for the day, even if you arrive at the Inn with < 3 coins, because chances are you're going to be able to eat for free anyway. (This has the side benefit of further draining their purses.)
4) Anyone who arrives at the Inn before Satsuki gets no benefit from her ability, since they have the same number of cards to choose from.
5) Arriving last at the Inn means you get first choice of stops at the next day.

So, it seems to me that the best way to minimize her effect on others, in addition to maximizing the benefit for yourself is to be the last player into the Inn. Yes, you're still taking a chance of not being able to eat, but it's severely diminished by the likelihood that you can eat for free (especially in the first couple of Inns, when it's even less likely you'll draw a repeat card). By letting everyone else go ahead of you, you're negating the "extra choice" that they'd have because of the extra card that you'd leave there. And you get to be the first one out of the Inn on the next day!

Another benefit: I find Satsuki very often receives the Lucky Cat card for meals, since other players are buying the cheapest thing they can, and she is averaging two coins on the random cards she draws. 8 coins is usually enough to win that battle.

I just bought the game a couple days ago and found a serious problem with the board. The paper that is glued to the board wasn't set properly causing a large raised "wrinkle" in the middle area. I geek mailed one rep, Philippe, but he hasn't responded. yukshake Who do I contact to request a replacement board?

Thanks.

Oh, patience is no problem. A quick acknowledgment is another. Anyway, based on their track record, I'm sure I'll be hearing from the company soon.

cheers

I have a friend who is Japanese who has cancer. I'm thinking about getting this game for my friend, but I'm wondering how big the board is. Specifically I'm wondering about the size to help me decide if it would be too big to fit on a hospital table. If it's too big I'll probably get Sushi Go! instead. Thanks!

It's not wide but it is pretty long, and needs a fair amount of space. I love both games but Sushi go is better in a hospital, in my opinion.

I second the idea of Sushi Go!

Tokaido definitely requires too much space.

There are 3 souvenir cards - A, B, C.

A and B cost two coins
C costs one coin

Can Sasayakko buy A and get B for free?

Or she can either buy A or B and get C for free?

Thank you!

Both are allowed. Nothing in Sasayakko's description requires buying the cheapest available souvenir, or buying all three.

Sassayakko doesn't get anything for free. She gets a REBATE. So the following are legal:

Pay 1, get C
Pay 2, get A or B
Pay 3, get (A or B) and C, get one coin (final net cost: 2)
Pay 4, get A and B, get two coins (final net cost: 2)
Pay 5, get A, B and C, get one coin (Final net cost: 4)

The distinction between them is that she has to have enough money to pay for everything she buys, she just gets coins back after the transaction.

Do you move to the next available space, or can you move two or more spaces?

Thank you!
You can move as many spaces as you want, with the following restrictions:
1) You cannot be on the same space as another player.
2) You cannot pass the Inn without stopping there.

Of course, because you will not move again until all other players have passed you, the further you move ahead, the more opportunities the other players will have to take turns before you get another turn. Welcome to the strategy of the game. :)

That being said, there are some reasons why you might want to skip ahead.

Say you were completely out of gold, and you desperately need some (for the Inn, souvenirs, etc.), I might skip over a couple of spaces to get to the farm, insuring I'd get some gold, and not risk someone else occupy the space.

This is particularly important in 2 and 3 player games, when there is only one spot per space.
