I don't know if there are any in depth strategic paths to be found in this game, but some tactical things that I follow (of course, I haven't won yet either, but eh).1. Do what other players are not, as was mentioned earlier in this thread.
2. Do some really strong cost benefit analysis when choosing your character (also mentioned earlier). Money should not be discounted in 3 and 5 player games, especially. Use that character as much as you can.
3. Look for ways to block and hose opponents. You'd be surprised at how much jumping ahead to snag a money spot causes another player to follow and leaves 3 players (in 5 player) broke without the ability to buy a meal or having to jump to the village to assure themselves a cheap meal.
4. Always take into account end game scoring. The temple alone can cause a worst to first moment.
5. Don't skip too far ahead unless you really have to. Most things are about 3 points. The things worth skipping ahead for are Money, to finish a panorama before other players, and to snag a souvenir spot. More encounters and hot springs means competing for end game scoring.
6. Money is key. Don't be caught with your pants down, because with no money, you miss so many opportunities to score points. Souvenirs are a real points grab, but you won't make sets without cash.
7. Be prepared for meal time...that means money and position. If you take the spot before the village, you will be last in and will have to pay 3 likely (end game scoring balances this), but you will be first out. Choose an appropriate spot for your situation as the players approach the village.
Best I could do.
